Life in Grantham
I've been getting on with my farm work for a little while now, and to say life here is intense is an understatement.
No matter how ready you are for it, nothing can completely prepare you.
I felt like I had spoken to so many of my friends who had done or were doing farm work, got advice on how to find jobs, saw where they lived and what was good and bad, and listened to their stories about the work.
But I still had no clue what to expect.
And I'm doing something I never could have expected.
I work in a seedlings nursery. At the moment I've been working in the grafting room, which means we cut the tops off one kind of plants and clip them to the bottoms of another kind to create a new plant. Recently I've been on the evening shift, from 1.30pm- 9.30pm.
It's an intense lifestyle. In that, there's a bunch of young people all living together in close quarters doing hard but boring as hell work and then partying on the weekends. You can imagine the shit that goes on.
But I'm learning to handle it. I've gone through some big shifts the past couple of weeks, and I'm growing and evolving in huge ways.
I'm learning lots about myself, understanding what works and what doesn't for me, and trying new forms of self care and setting boundaries. Constantly living around others, I need to remind myself to take time on my own otherwise I burn out, which is why I don't mind the night shift cos I enjoy my mornings!
I've also got some incredible friends here that I don't know what I'd do without. Many people are leaving soon ish as they started way earlier than me, but lots will still be here. Everyone is at various stages in their farm work so it will be interesting to see how the dynamics change when lots of people leave.
But I'm really proud of myself for getting on with it and what I've achieved so far. It's a tough experience, like a lot of people say, but I'm lucky with the job I have as it's pretty easy going considering.
But it really isn't as bad as some people say, and the time actually flies by!
So I'm doing my best to enjoy the experience while I can!
